Ben Roy, a point guard in the class of 2022 committed to head coach Joe Jones and Boston University on Monday night. The 6’2” Manasquan and Team Rio product chose the Terriers after an unannounced, surprise visit.
NJHoopRecruit spoke with Roy via Instagram Live on Tuesday night about his decision, career, and future in basketball. You can watch the full interview here.
“With me, it comes down to relationships. It is the thing I value most in my life, and not only in basketball,” Roy said about his commitment to BU.
Roy mentioned his connection with the staff and current players is what set the 2020 Patriot League tournament champions apart in his recruitment.
“Those are my kind of guys,” he said. “Even for my parents, they were like ‘those are people we want to send our kid off to.’”
Just minutes after committing, Roy had already received the nickname “Benny Boston” from numerous people, and he shared his thoughts on the newly coined name.
“I love it. I don’t know it yet, but that is going to be home sooner than later,” he said. “Hopefully I can just live up to that name and that’s the plan. I gotta do some damage to keep that one sticking.”
Roy became a 1,000 point scorer through three years at Manasquan High School, and has led the Warriors to a 42-1 record over the past two seasons. We asked him to give a description of who Ben Roy is in his own eyes.
“I’m just a kid from a small town who loves to play basketball. I’ve had a love for the game ever since I can remember. I live in a community where people support me, but some people are also jealous, so I have learned to deal with both sides of it,” he said. “I feel like I am a well-rounded guy. I play a little bit of basketball, but I enjoy school and I enjoy spending time with friends. I’m a normal kid.”
