Q+A: Kahlil Whitney

February 26, 2018

At the tender age of 15, Kahlil Whitney and his dad left their hometown of Chicago and moved to New Jersey. The family decided to to uproot their lives to provide a better education and basketball situation for Khalil.

The move was risk, but it was worth it. Whitney blew up on the national scene last year, nabbing over 15 scholarships offers from some of the top college programs in America. Whitney was also ranked as one of the top 60 players in America in the class of 2019.

Kahlil took his momentum from the summer and carried it over to the season for Roselle Catholic.  Whitney saves his biggest games for when it matters most. For example, the sensational wing scored 17 points in a win against The Patrick School to bring home the Union County Championship.

Recently we sat down with Kahlil to discuss his summer on the AAU circuit, coming from a basketball family, what makes Roselle Catholic click and more. - by Christian Mordi / @thedribbledrop

Respect The Shooter: Lester Quinones

February 23, 2018

“I don’t get too excited about shots I make because I’m supposed make them. I’m more perplexed when I don’t make it.” - Jesus Shuttlesworth.

Once an afterthought in basketball, the art of shooting has become one of the games most interesting subjects to study. From Reggie Miller, Ray Allen, Larry Bird and Stephen Curry all have different shooting mechanics in a sense but they all have been extremely effective from beyond the arc.

One thing about the art of shooting is clear though: there is a method to the madness. For those shooting savants, TheDribbleDrop has started a new feature series called “Respect The Shooter.” Each article will discuss the ins and outs of shooting.

Next up is St. Benedict's Prep wing Lester Quinones. The sensational shooter is knocking down 3 three pointers made per game thus far. Quinones has also knocked down 4 or more three pointers in a game five times this year thus far.

Q+A: Kylee Watson

February 22, 2018

They say anything’s possible… you have to dream like you never seen obstacles - Jermaine Cole

The future is bright at Mainland high and a big reason that many people see light at the end of the tunnel is Kylee Watson. From her first game on the court, Watson has had a massive impact on the culture and success of the program at Mainland High. Much was expected from Watson from the door and like the mailman, she delivered.

Upon watching her play, it’s easy to see why scouts are locked in. Even though she is a sophomore, Watson is 6’2 and has a wide array of power moves and counters down low. She’s a force on the glass and a terror on the defensive side of the floor.  After a 20 plus win season as a freshman, Watson has Mainland undefeated and on their way to a county championship game. The sky's the limit for Watson.

Recently we sat down with Kylee to discuss playing for Team USA, her first summer with the Philly Belles, what makes Mainland the team to beat and more. -Christian Mordi @thedribbledrop

February 21, 2018

Without Faith, nothing is possible. With it, nothing is impossible - Mary McLeod Bethune

Faith was born into the game of basketball. I mean, it’s in her blood. Her mom organizes an AAU program called the New Jersey Belles. As a result, Faith spent a large portion of her time in the gym. Without much thought, Faith would join in the fun, soaking in tutelage from instructors while honing her game. The hard work paid off, as Faith possessed a polished skill set far beyond her years in middle school.

Gameday Playlist Vibes: Jack Cavanaugh

February 19, 2018

For many, music is a push factor against the demons of anxiety and nervousness before a competition. For others, a pre-game playlist is a "Secret sauce" used to stir up and release whatever is channeled within them in an effort to lead their team to victory.

Today we begin a new series titled "Gameday Playlist Vibes," which feature must-play pre-game songs from rising basketball stars in New Jersey. Next up is Sparta guard Jack Cavanaugh. The STRAPPED junior is known for getting hot fast on the court, averaging 16 points per game this year. Jack also has 5 games this year that he's hit three 3 pointers made in a game or more. He's also knocked down 5 threes in a game twice this year. Enjoy the jams from the junior guard below.

Thoughts before the game: My mentality Before the game is to make sure all my teammates are on the same page and I have to get completely locked in mentality on winning the game. The music helps me not think about anything but the task at hand

On the bus rides for away games: On the road I just tell myself to not worry about what people are saying before the game and to keep the crowd out of my head. All that matters is keeping a great attitude so that my team can do everything we can to win
