Team: Old Tappan
Ranking: 24
Record Last season: 15-8, 5-3 in conference play
Key players: Justin Minaya, senior
Team analysis: The 2015-2016 season was probably the most exciting year of Old Tappan Boys Basketball since high school legend Lenny Cooke donned a jersey.
While the team was only 15-8, it was a strong showing for the program. Old Tappan boasted victories against solid teams like Snyder and Dwight-Englewood. They also played programs like Ramapo, Paramus Catholic and Don Bosco close. In their last game of the season, eventual Group Champions Teaneck only beat Old Tappan by three points.
For a public school, Old Tappan isn’t scared to come outside and play with the big dogs in the state. One reason the team steps out with confidence is star player Justin Minaya. The talented guard/forward was sensational last year, nabbing 2nd-team All-Group honors. His strong play is starting to get the attention of the right people, as division one offers are starting to pour in.
Outside of Teaneck, Old Tappan has the potential to beat every team in their division with ease. If they play a strong schedule and perform well, they will be a top 25 team for sure. Old Tappan could be a team to watchout for, as they can make some legit noise in Group 3 come playoff time.
Stat to know: Justin Minaya (17 + ppg avg in '15-'16), son of former Mets GM Omar Minaya) has grabbed the attention of numerous division one coaches due to his stellar play last year. Vermont and Boston University have offered Minaya. Be on the lookout for additional teams to shoot overs his way as the season progresses.
