Team: St. Joes Montvale
Record Last season: 19-9, 5-3 in conference play
Key players: Chauncey Hawkins, senior, 17.0 points, five free throws made per game;Isaac Hippolyte, senior, 104 field goals made in 2016.
Potential emerging stars: Joseph Radi, senior
Team analysis: St. Joe’s was quietly one of the best teams in the state in 2016. While the team has lost Nate Garvey to Howard University, there is still plenty left in cupboard.
St. Joes does a great job getting their players ready for tournament time by scheduling a tough out of conference schedule. Last year they posted solid wins against Hackensack, American History, Paramus Catholic and Bergen Catholic. Their biggest victory came in the states, as they shocked Hudson Catholic at home winning 87-81.
In regards to talent, St. Joes is returning a strong cast of players from last years team. Senior guard Chauncey Hawkins is one of the best under the radar players in New Jersey. In 2016, Hawkins averaged 17 points per game. He mixed up his offensive approach as well, averaging 2 three per game alongside 5 free throws made per game. His ability to be effective from all spots on the floor made him one of the hardest players to guard last year. Seniors Isaac Hippolyte and Joseph Radi should have bigger roles this year as well.
Stat to know: With three top teams ranked in our top 20, The Big North could be the best division in New Jersey.
